Will Ariana Grande return to Broadway for a little conga? Gloria Estefan has her eyes on the pop princess as a candidate to play her in the autobiographical On Your Feet!, the New York Daily News reports. The tuner, with music by Gloria and Emilio Estefan and a book by Alexander Dinelaris, is set to play the Great White Way beginning October 5, 2015, following a summer out-of-town tryout in Chicago. Tony winner Jerry Mitchell will direct.
“Grande would be somebody wonderful,” Estefan said. The Grammy winner first encountered the pop star on a cruise ship when Grande was just eight years old. Grande was singing along to a Karaoke track of “My Heart Will Go On.” “I literally went up to her,” Estefan recounts, “and told her and her mom, ‘I don’t know if you plan on doing this, but this is what you need to be doing.’”
At the age of 21, Grande has risen to fame as a singer, with hit singles including “The Way,” “Problem” and “Break Free.” Before that, she appeared on Broadway in 13 and on the small screen in the Nickelodeon series Victorious and Sam & Cat.
Casting for On You Feet! will be announced at a later date. However, something tells us that Grande did not show up to one of the open calls, nor did she send in a tape.
